What this looks like in practice.

Gotstyle MenswearDigital Marketing Manager, 2009 – 2016
No budget to buy attention, so the channel had to be the bet.

An independent Toronto menswear retailer competing for discovery against national chains with far larger media budgets. Over seven years the business went from a single store selling club clothing to a multi-location retailer with a working ecommerce operation. The channels where menswear brands already competed were expensive and crowded, and there was no structural advantage in any of them.

 • Identified Pinterest as underserved while its audience was predominantly women and it carried almost no men's fashion content
 • Built out men's fashion boards before competitors treated the platform as relevant to menswear
 • Produced the Naked Man campaign — video-led, built on a single provocative idea rather than product features
 • Rebuilt positioning through the shift from club clothing to multi-location ecommerce
100k Pinterest followers in months on no paid spend, now 300k+; campaign hit 7.2M views and took Silver at the 2013 Shopper Innovation Awards

Built for Toronto founders
who need a real marketing leader.

01
Seed to Series B Founders

Toronto startups with product traction but inconsistent growth. You need strategic direction, not more freelancers.

02
Teams With Traction, Not Strategy

You have product-market signals but growth is stalling. Channels are running without clear pipeline impact or attribution.

03
Startups Needing Execution Focus

You need strategic leadership paired with execution focus — not another consultant who writes decks and disappears.

You’ve been here before.

1
Channels running without a clear growth strategy tying them together.
2
Weak conversion from traffic to qualified pipeline — lots of visits, few deals.
3
Fragmented execution across content, paid, and lifecycle with nobody owning the outcome.
4
Your founder is playing CMO, and it’s eating their roadmap alive.
5
You’ve hired agencies and freelancers — but nobody sets strategy or measures what matters.

Story Mode fixes the leadership gap. Not with more tools — with the right operator embedded in your team.

Strategy to system.

A Fractional CMO from Story Mode doesn’t just advise — they embed. 10–20 hours per week, leading strategy, directing your team, and building the systems that scale output without scaling headcount.

Questions.

What does a fractional CMO do for a Toronto startup?
The same thing it does anywhere: owns positioning, GTM strategy, channel priorities, and pipeline accountability part-time, without a full-time executive hire. What is specific to Toronto is that most companies here need US-ready positioning earlier than the domestic market alone would demand, because the addressable market at home is smaller than the ambition.
Can a Canadian fractional CMO help with US go-to-market?
Yes, and it is most of the work. Canadian startups tend to hit a ceiling where the domestic market is too small to sustain the growth rate investors expect, and the messaging that worked here reads as understated to a US buyer. Adjusting for that — pricing, proof expectations, competitive framing — is a positioning exercise rather than a translation one.
When should a Toronto startup bring in marketing leadership?
Usually at the point where founder-led sales is working but not repeatable, and typically before a raise rather than after. Seed and early Series A companies here often have real traction and no one senior owning how it compounds — which is exactly the gap a fractional engagement fills without spending runway on an executive hire.
Do you only work with Toronto startups?
No. Story Mode is based in Niagara-on-the-Lake, about ninety minutes from Toronto, and works with companies across Canada, the US, and Europe. Toronto is a focus area because the ecosystem is dense and the cross-border problem is well understood here, not because of geography.
How is this different from hiring an agency?
An agency executes against a brief someone on your side has to write. A fractional CMO writes the brief, sits in your leadership meetings, and directs the agencies you already have. If nobody internally can brief an agency well, adding another one rarely helps.
What should we expect in the first 90 days?
Weeks one and two are diagnosis. Weeks three and four identify the highest-leverage moves. From month two you have an operating plan running — campaign roadmap, KPI model, ownership map, and a weekly rhythm your team keeps after the engagement ends.
