What this looks like in practice.

BitrefillGrowth Marketer, 2018
A gift card directory gave a crypto holder no reason to choose them.

Bitrefill was adding gift cards as a second product line, entering a category where established sites already competed on catalogue breadth and country coverage. The default plan was another directory — list the brands, list the countries — which left the company's actual advantage unstated and gave nobody a reason to switch.

  • Rebuilt the launch around a defined ICP: crypto-holding digital nomads, not gift card shoppers generally
  • Positioned the product as a way to start living on crypto rather than as a catalogue
  • Structured the campaign vertical by vertical — food, gaming, electronics, travel — each with dedicated landing pages
  • Managed SEO across 170 countries to support the vertical structure
Gift cards reached ~90% of company revenue within one year

The real customer was invisible under the old positioning.

A permissionless Bitcoin payment gateway, effectively a founder and a product with no marketing function and no recurring revenue. It had positioned itself against BitPay — putting a bootstrapped team into a head-on fight it could not fund, while describing a customer segment that already had plenty of options.

  • Repositioned around merchants locked out of conventional banking rails, concentrated in South America and Africa, where permissionless is the only workable option rather than a preference
  • Rebuilt messaging, content, and business development outreach around that segment
  • Built and managed a cross-functional team across content, email, SEO, influencer, and paid
  • Ran sustained funnel optimisation against the new positioning
Conversion 0.5% → 3%; from no recurring revenue to five figures monthly, primarily organic

Built for fintech founders who need
a real marketing leader.

01
Complex Buyer Journeys

Fintech founders navigating trust-sensitive, multi-step buyer journeys who need positioning that earns confidence at every stage.

02
Unclear GTM Narrative

Teams with product traction but an unclear go-to-market story. You have users — but your messaging doesn’t convert at scale.

03
Marketing-Sales Misalignment

Startups where marketing and sales aren’t speaking the same language — leading to weak handoffs, lost deals, and inconsistent pipeline.

Sound familiar?

1
Weak differentiation in crowded fintech categories — your product is strong but the market can’t tell.
2
Long sales cycles with low conversion consistency — demos happen but deals stall.
3
Channel spend without clear pipeline impact — you’re spending but can’t trace what’s working.
4
Trust-sensitive buyers who need proof before they commit — and your messaging isn’t giving it to them.
5
No senior marketing leader connecting strategy to execution across your team and vendors.

Story Mode fixes the leadership gap. Not with more tools \u2014 with trust-driven positioning and disciplined execution.

Questions.

Why does fintech need a specialised fractional CMO?
Because your buyer has to trust you with money before they will convert, and trust is built in a different order than interest. Generic playbooks optimise the top of the funnel and leave the risk objection unaddressed until the moment someone is asked to commit. Fintech marketing has to handle that objection early, in the copy, before anyone asks for a demo.
How is fintech marketing different from SaaS marketing?
In SaaS the worst case is usually wasted budget. In fintech it can be a regulatory problem, a frozen account, or someone's payroll not clearing. That changes the buying committee, lengthens the evaluation, and makes proof and compliance posture load-bearing parts of the message rather than trust-page filler.
How do you build trust in fintech marketing?
Specificity and proof rather than reassurance. Named partners, real security posture, plain-language explanations of what happens to a customer's money, and honest treatment of limitations. Every fintech site says bank-grade security, which is exactly why it no longer signals anything.
Can this work for both B2B and B2C fintech?
Yes, though the risk conversation differs. B2B fintech has to satisfy a compliance reviewer who can veto without ever speaking to you. B2C has to overcome an individual's suspicion in seconds. The core discipline — address the risk early and prove it — holds in both.
Do you support compliance-conscious messaging?
Yes. Growth messaging that balances persuasion with accurate claims, since fintech cannot afford to overpromise. In practice that means working with whoever reviews your marketing rather than around them, and finding the line between compelling and defensible before legal does.
What is the first lever you usually pull?
Positioning and mid-funnel friction, in that order. Most fintech startups leak conversions in the middle because the messaging does not address buyer risk early enough. Adding top-of-funnel spend on top of that just increases the cost of the leak.
How is this different from hiring an agency?
An agency executes deliverables from the outside, against a brief someone on your side has to write. A fractional CMO writes the brief, sits in your leadership meetings, and owns the pipeline number rather than the output.
